Reading Slowly, On Purpose
In a world that rewards skimming, slow reading is a quiet act of resistance.
Somewhere along the way, reading started to feel like a chore on a checklist. Books became things to finish. Articles became things to skim. The number of words consumed mattered more than the ones that stayed.
Slow reading is the opposite. It is reading the same paragraph twice on purpose. It is stopping mid-page to write a note in the margin. It is closing the book to think before turning the page.
“A book is a mirror. If an ape looks in, no apostle can look out.”
How to read slowly without feeling slow
- Choose fewer books at a time. Two is enough.
- Read with a pen. Underline anything you would say out loud.
- Pause at the end of each chapter. Write one sentence about it.
- Re-read the parts that confused you. Confusion is a signpost.
You will read fewer books this year. You will also remember more of them. The trade is worth it.
